I am extremely disappointed with my experience working with Greenville County Redevelopment Authority. The rental application process was unnecessarily stressful and involved repeated requests for deeply personal documentation regarding my marital status and separation. While I understand the need for verification, the way the process was handled created emotional strain and instability for me and my children. Affordable housing programs are meant to support families during difficult times, not add additional pressure. I hope the agency reviews its communication practices and considers how these requests impact applicants who are already navigating challenging situations. I believe applicants deserve clear guidelines, consistency, and compassion throughout the process. I want others to be aware that your background history can make you automatically not eligible, even if the issue is old and there have been no recent problems. Families trying to move forward and do better may still be denied based on past mistakes. I understand there are policies in place, but there should also be room for consideration of current circumstances and positive change. It’s discouraging to feel like there is no opportunity to explain or show growth. I hope the agency considers reviewing how background checks are handled so families aren’t permanently held back from stable housing.

I was trying to rent a property through GCRA, and had a hard time getting a hold of someone initially. I finally made contact with Ms. Hallman who I conversed with for about a month and a half regarding a townhome. I reached out in early August and wanted to see what might be available coming up. She gave me some dates and told me to check back in around the 1st of September. I did due to my lease coming up in October. Went in person to fill out an application only to be told that because I was one person, I was not eligible. Mind you I had discussed this with her over a month before. A true waste of time. Basically if you don't have kids or a house full keep pushing!

Every time I call these people to get answers concerning my mom’s house they are rude and unprofessional. I would not recommend doing business with them. Note this is my opinion!!!!!
